Turkey?

Happy Thanksgiving! As you can imagine Thanksgiving isn't celebrated here. For some reason the pilgrims landing at Plymouth rock almost 400 years ago isn't that big of a deal. The snow that fell several days ago has essentially disappeared now. Instead it has rained for two days and been foggy. Fortunately I love rainy days and fog so this hasn't depressed me at all. For some reason when I look out my window and see a grey and dreary day my spirits are always lifted up. There must be something wrong with me....

Snow walk

Today I went for a short walk around my town to take some pictures. As you can imagine the snow has made everything very pretty. The mountains especially are breathtaking.

Snow in my town!

It's Snowing!!!! Today has been interesting. I lost power for about 3 or 4 hours today. This is not a big deal as it happens every once in awhile, although usually it comes back in a minute or two. I was just about to begin cooking my dinner so I went out to a restaurant (механа) instead, this was fine by me as I always looking for any excuse not to cook. While I was walking to the restaurant it started to snow. Thankfully when I came back home my power was on and I could warm up my room with my heater and write this right now. I hope that it snows so much that I can go skiing to school tomorrow.... Of course I don't have skis but I will deal with that later.

Сняг!

When I woke up this morning and looked out my window I saw snow in the mountains! I quickly got dressed and went for a walk to take some pictures. These pictures don't portray how gorgeous the mountains are right now. Later I will go on a longer hike into the mountains and take more pictures.

Боклук

Well it finally rained today, overnight anyway. The clouds coming over the mountains were very beautiful, I didn’t take pictures because I already have similar ones. Allot of the haze in the air was washed away and the city is much cleaner. These are some pictures that I took on a hike into the little hills near my town this past weekend. Sounds stupid but it is amazing how different a place looks when you are looking down upon it.

Pollution

You might not have noticed it but many of my pictures have a very hazy quality to them, especially far off in the distance and in the sky. This is because of the large amount of air pollution in Bulgaria. With the weather getting colder more families have started their heaters to keep warm. The fuel that most of the heaters run on is either coal or wood. This is primarily because both coal and wood are cheap here. Unfortunately they also create a large amount of air pollution resulting in a permanent haze in the sky. Needless to say this tends to damper allot of otherwise beautiful views of the town and the mountains. It is also noteworthy that it has not rained in over a month in Гоце Делчев and there has been no significant wind during that time. I'm not a weather man but that might also effect air quality.

Failed hike

Well this weekend my friend Ned (pictured) and I were going to go camping and hiking in the mountains near the town of Bansko. It was going to be pretty cold, around freezing at night, but we both agreed that that would be part of the fun. When I told my Bulgarian fiends that I was going to be doing this they generally told me not to do it because I would freeze to death. I have lots of wonter camping experience however and new what to expect. We were both well prepared with clothing and food so it would not have been dangerous at all. When Ned and I got to Bansko we looked for a bus that would take us to the camp where we were planning on staying. Unfortunately the buses didn't run anymore because it is so late in the year. No problem, we knew that there would be cabs around and would take one of those. We asked a cab driver about how far the camp was, he said about 18 km. When we asked how much he would charge to take us to the camp, called Vikrin btw, he said 30 lev, about $21. This is way to much for a cab ride. To put it in perspective a bus ticket from Gotse Delchev to Sofia, about 250 km away and a 4 hour ride, is 24 lev round trip. The 30 lev was ONE WAY for 18 km! We asked some other cab drivers and they all essentially gave us the same price. After expressing our displeasure at cab drivers in Bulgaria using some very colorfull metaphors and language, and one or two hand gestures, we decided not to go. So all be for-warned. Bulgarian cab drivers in the city of Bansko are a bunch of crooks and thiefs who should have stomachs removed with a rusty scissors through their eye balls.... Maybe I am under stating it a little but you get the idea.

More pictures near a village I hiked to the other day. I really like the Bulgarian scarecrow.
